George Douglas Norton, Jr., known to most as “DJ”, is a lifelong resident of McNairy County, Tennessee and the Senior Shareholder of Norton Law Office, PLLC. Raised in McNairy County, he graduated from Ramer Junior High School and McNairy Central High School, where he excelled both academically and athletically. A former football player, he was a proud member of the 2001 undefeated regular-season team and earned a spot on the All-West Tennessee Football Team as an offensive lineman. His formative years, especially his experiences on the football field, taught him the value of hard work, perseverance, and resilience - qualities he brings to his legal practice every day.
Upon graduating from high school, Mr. Norton attended the University of Tennessee at Martin. There, he majored in Political Science with a concentration in Public Administration and a minor in Communication, graduating summa cum laude with a 4.0 GPA. He was also a participate in the University Scholar Program. His commitment to public service led him to an internship in the Tennessee Governor’s Office, further solidifying his passion for the law.
As a top pre-law student and recipient of the prestigious Leech Scholarship, Norton was initially set to attend the University of Tennessee Law School in Knoxville. Family obligations, however, led him to follow his heart and enroll at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, where he thrived academically and professionally. During law school, he served as a Graduate Assistant in the Legal Writing Center, helping fellow students master legal research and writing skills. His commitment to excellence earned him an externship with Chief Federal Judge Jon Phipps McCalla, and he held leadership roles as Associate Chief Justice of the Moot Court Board. He was also honored to be named Moot Court Competition Champion and Mock Trial Champion, a feat that has not been repeated. He received the “Cali Award” in Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and Trial Advocacy representing the top grade in each of these courses. Graduating magna cum laude in 2009, Norton ranked in the top 10 of his class and had the privilege of delivering the student commencement speech.
Following law school, Mr. Norton began his legal career as a law clerk and later an associate attorney at the trial law firm of Glassman, Wyatt, Tuttle & Cox in Memphis. However, his deep-rooted connection to his hometown drew him back to McNairy County, where he opened his law firm in 2010, with offices in Selmer and Ripley, Tennessee. Over the years, he has built a reputation as a smart, efficient, and tough litigator. As the first in his family to graduate from college, he understands the value of hard work and determination, qualities that drive him to fight tirelessly for his clients.
Throughout his career, Norton has handled a broad spectrum of legal matters, focusing primarily on criminal defense, family law - including divorce, custody, and adoption - and personal injury cases. He has tried over five hundred family law matters, represented thousands of criminal defendants with significant success, and recovered in excess of one million dollars for injured clients across Tennessee. From murder trials, wrongful death, to complex civil litigation, he has represented clients in federal, state, and appellate courts throughout the state. Additionally, he has served as a municipal attorney for several local governments and currently holds the position of Municipal Judge in Bethel Springs, Tennessee.
Norton has been honored multiple times, including being named a Top Attorney of North America and Best Attorney of McNairy County for 2022, 2023, and 2024. His dedication to the legal profession and his clients is unwavering. Whether securing a dismissal of criminal charges, winning a substantial settlement for an injured client, or helping families navigate complex divorce and custody disputes, he approaches each case as if it were one of his family members that he is representing.
Beyond his legal practice, Norton is a devoted husband to Sarah Norton. Together, they make their home in Selmer, Tennessee, where they enjoy family, traveling, spending time with their pets, and supporting numerous local charities.
